Insidious nears the $50-million mark

Our favorite little paranormal horror film, which was made for just under $2 million, nears the 50 million dollar mark in the box office this weekend.

Horror fans, myself included, love this Insidious. It's the perfect movie to jump start the horror genre in our jaded age of cinema filled with jump and shock scares.

"A lot of people try to create movies that scare you," said producer Jason Blum,  "But this is a movie that's genuinely scary - it's like a throwback to those classic '70s horror films - and people are responding to that."

The most impressive thing about Insidious' rise to the top is the extremely limited advertising campaign. The film essentially relied on word of mouth to spread the word.
"It's hard to do, but when it works, it's a much more effective both on the screen and on the bottom line," says Blum, who later this year is also planning to shoot The Lords of Salem with Rob Zombie.

Insidious is the little horror film that could, and deserves every bit of credit it is getting because it's one of the best paranormal films around. We can only hope that the horror dream-team of James Wan and Leigh Whannell keep on churning out top quality films like Insidious.
