Insidious nears the $50-million mark

Our favorite little paranormal horror film, which was made for just under $2 million, nears the 50 million dollar mark in the box office this weekend.

Horror fans, myself included, love this Insidious. It's the perfect movie to jump start the horror genre in our jaded age of cinema filled with jump and shock scares.

"A lot of people try to create movies that scare you," said producer Jason Blum,  "But this is a movie that's genuinely scary - it's like a throwback to those classic '70s horror films - and people are responding to that."

The most impressive thing about Insidious' rise to the top is the extremely limited advertising campaign. The film essentially relied on word of mouth to spread the word.
"It's hard to do, but when it works, it's a much more effective both on the screen and on the bottom line," says Blum, who later this year is also planning to shoot The Lords of Salem with Rob Zombie.

Insidious is the little horror film that could, and deserves every bit of credit it is getting because it's one of the best paranormal films around. We can only hope that the horror dream-team of James Wan and Leigh Whannell keep on churning out top quality films like Insidious.

Yet another Rob Zombie update! Werewolf Women of the SS

Some time last night, Rob Zombie updated his film blog by simply saying "Finally!" along with the image posted below.

Those of you who've seen Grindhouse are familiar with Mr. Zombie's fake trailer for Werewolf Women of the SS.
So, the real question is, what does this mean? With Rob Zombie currently working on his newest film The Lords of Salem, is it possible that he has also been green lit to make his fake trailer into a feature film in the same way that Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun were?

Only time will tell, so we'll have to wait and see what's in store for Rob Zombie and the Werewolf Women of the SS

Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem Update: The Story

Behold!

The official plot synopsis for Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem!

Heidi, a blonde rock chick, DJs at a local radio station, and together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster) forms part of the "Big H Radio Team". A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi, "a gift from the Lords". She assumes it's a rock band on a mission to spread their word. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lords' record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma.
Later Whitey plays the Lords' record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with listeners. The arrival of another wooden box from the Lords presents the Big H Team with free tickets, posters and records to host a gig in Salem. Soon Heidi and her cohorts find that the gig is far from the rock spectacle they're expecting: the original Lords of Salem are returning, and they're out for BLOOD.

I'm not sure about this, honestly. I had expected I much a darker and sinister plot after seeing all of the movie's publicity stills and posters and this seems like more of a quirky horror-comedy or something along those lines. However, as usual, I'm sure Mr. Zombie will create a killer film

Rutger Hauer is The Reverend

Writer/director Neil Jones directs The Reverend, the tale of a fresh new holy man who embarks on a new parish, soon, however, he thirsts and hungers for the flesh of the living after a mysterious late-night visit from a seemingly helpless girl.
Rutger Hauer, fresh out of Hobo with Shotgun, plays the titular reverend along with Stuart Brennan (Risen), Tamer Hassan (Clash of the Titans), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser, Jack Falls), Emily Booth (Doghouse, Evil Aliens) and Giovanni Lombardo Radice (Cannibal Ferox, The Omen).

Not much else is known about the film, which began shooting on March 30th. However, it's official website reveals that a graphic novel will be released along with the movie sometime this year.
